Cloud to stay, rain likely today

NEW DELHI: Three days of intense humidity gave way to light showers across the city on Tuesday. While the Met department recorded an official 0.4mm rainfall in the city till 5.30pm, Gurgaon received as much as 40mm.

“An upper air cyclonic circulation exists over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining Vidarbha which is affecting the weather from west Rajasthan to west Madhya Pradesh. A western disturbance is also likely to affect northwest of the country from Wednesday. We are expecting very light rain till Wednesday with the possibility of lightning on Thursday. The partly cloudy sky will start becoming clear from October 10 onwards,” said a Met official.

The day’s maximum temperature was 35.7 degree Celsius, two degrees above normal. The minimum was 28 degree Celsius, six degrees above normal. “The above normal minimum temperature was a result of thick clouds in the morning and high humidity which ranged between 55% and 85% on Tuesday. PUSA with 22mm, Delhi University with 17mm and Ridge with 16.5mm were the areas which received highest rainfall,” said a Met official.

The city has witnessed below normal rainfall during the monsoon, with the exception of July. The southwest monsoon has still not withdrawn from the city and continue to pass through Kupwara, Kukernag, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Churu, Phalodi and Jaiselmer. A Met official said conditions were becoming favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from more parts of northwest in the next two days. “However, this may not impact Delhi,” he said.
