Hours after seeking an anticipatory bail in the Aircel-Maxis case, former finance minister P Chidambaram sought another anticipatory bail in the INX Media case on Wednesday, 30 May.
Chidambaram had earlier moved Delhi’s Patiala House court seeking protection from arrest in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.
The senior Congress leader moved his plea for anticipatory bail before Special Judge OP Saini, who directed Chidambaram to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 5 June as already summoned by the agency.
Chidambaram was represented by senior advocate and Congress leader Kapil Sibal.
The court, which issued a notice to the ED seeking its reply by 5 June, also directed the ED not to take any coercive action against Chidambaram in the matter till then.
The court has already granted Chidambaram’s son, Karti, interim protection from arrest till 10 July in two cases filed by the CBI and the ED in 2011 and 2012 in the Aircel-Maxis matter arising out of 2G spectrum cases.
Karti was granted relief after the ED sought time to argue on his application seeking anticipatory bail.
The matter pertains to grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel.
