Jeep India has confirmed a new small SUV that is expected to break covers by 2022. The new entry-level SUV will sit below Renegade in its line-up and will field against top-selling models including Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza in the segment. Confirming to the new model, the company recently announced its five-year strategy which also includes four electric models and ten plug-in hybrids due for launch in the overseas markets by 2022. Other models such as the Wrangler pick-up and Grand Wagoneer (which was first confirmed in 2012) are also set for launch in 2022. As for the Indian market, the company could also launch a three-row mid-size UV that could sit above the Compass in Jeep India’s line-up.
Sources in the know suggest the new model is unlikely to be introduced in the Chinese market as most of the Chinese brands already offer small SUVs at an affordable price. According to the platform strategy at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the new small Jeep could share underpinnings with a Fiat model. It is expected that new small Jeep SUV could be based on the same platform that will underpin the next-generation Panda city car, though there is yet conformation on the same.
If that happens, Jeep could think of developing its own body and interior along the lines of the next-generation Panda 4×4. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, a globally renowned automaker, recently announced strategy for its subsidiaries which includes Abarth, Dodge, Fiat, Lancla, Ram, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Jeep.
With focus on expanding its dealership network in India, Jeep recently announced its plan to open new outlets and service centres in the country. Besides, Jeep is also looking at making India as the export hub and plans to ramp up production at FCA’s Ranjangaon unit in Maharashtra to 2,40,000 units from the current 1,60,000 units.
