Supreme Court rules against Centre, reinstates Alok Verma as CBI chief

Parliament: Rajya Sabha adjourned till 2 pm, Citizenship Bill to be tabled in Lok Sabha

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Tuesday after members of the Samajwadi Party protested against a likely inquiry into their party leader Akhilesh Yadav in connection with a sand mining case. Proceedings in the Lok Sabha began with the Question Hour, after which the government introduced the Trade Unions (Amendment) Bill. The government will introduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, later in the day.

Gita Gopinath joins International Monetary Fund as its first female chief economist

India-born economist Gita Gopinath took over as the International Monetary Fund’s chief economist, becoming the first woman to occupy the top post. Gopinath joined last week and becomes the second India-born economist to hold the position after former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan.

Delhi: Man shot dead for allegedly throwing stone at a pet dog

A 30-year-old man was shot dead in New Delhi on Sunday after he allegedly threw a stone at a pet dog. The police have registered a case of murder against the dog’s owner, identified as Mehtab, who has been since missing.

Karnataka Bharat bandh: Protestors pelt stones at bus in Bengaluru, strike evokes mixed response

Public transport in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka were disrupted on Tuesday because of a 48-hour nationwide strike called by 10 central trade unions. Nationwide trade union strike begins, CPI(M) members detained in West Bengal for blocking roads

Meghalaya: Centre tells Supreme Court it is taking all appropriate steps to rescue trapped miners
