Double Standards in Govt’s Liquor Policy: M.M. Sanjeev Kumar

Thiruvananthapuram: DCC General Secretary M.M. Sanjeev Kumar has lashed out at the State Government and the management of Malabar Distilleries, alleging “double standards” regarding the branding and production of new liquor varieties.

The criticism follows a recent affidavit filed by Malabar Distilleries in the High Court, stating that they had abandoned the public contest intended to select a name and logo for their new liquor brand.

“Misleading the Public”

Sanjeev Kumar alleged that the government’s claim—that it has never promoted or glorified alcohol—is a move to mislead the public. “While the government initially sought public suggestions to ensure transparency in registering brand names as per foreign liquor rules, they later disregarded all entries and chose a name independently. This is a blatant deception,” he stated.

Allegations of Rule Violation

The DCC leader further charged that the government is intentionally concealing the fact that liquor is being produced and distributed even before obtaining the necessary licenses.Sanjeev Kumar had previously filed a petition against naming the liquor brand while a High Court stay was in effect. He also staged a hunger strike in front of the Secretariat protesting the government’s move to bring the product to market in violation of the court’s stay. The protest ended after he was arrested and removed from the site by the police.
