Living a balancing act

Not everyone can juggle two jobs and be successful at it. But when it comes to American actor, comedian, and practicing physician Ken Jeong, he not only handles two roles but also does a fine job.

Renowned for his roles on television and as gang lord Leslie Chow in theHangover Trilogy, the 46-year-old is currently playing the role of Dr. Ken in the eponymous sitcom airing on Comedy Central.

Excited that he has viewers in the country, Ken tells MetroPlus over phone that he is deeply honoured. “It’s great to know the show has a following in India. I can’t wait for people to see what we’re up to.”

Conceptualised on his experience as a doctor prior to becoming a stand-up comedian, the show revolves around his everyday life affairs, albeit, with a twist balancing work and home.

“This is family comedy based on my life and work. I think this helps define who I am and the sensibilities of Dr. Ken a little bit. This is my view of comedy and Dr. Ken is the most rounded character I’ve ever played. It’s exciting to play such a real person.”

He points out that while he’s comfortable playing the role of a doctor, the most exciting part in the show for him is the holistic involvement he has in it.

“The fact that this is almost completely my show makes it thoroughly enjoyable. I created the show and I’m also the writer and technically, the producer. So I have a lot more responsibility and creative influence on the show.”

The most essential takeaway from Dr. Ken is the realism in the story, the actor affirms.

Being me Ken Jeong

“Just as much as I relate to the character, I’m sure everyone will too. To me, it is gratifying that I play a character based on my life. Of course, there is still some difference from the real me. Dr. Ken can’t be completely me. However, I think the role stands out since there’s something in it for everyone.”

Looking back, on where he discovered he had a knack for comedy, Ken recalls: “When I was a kid, I took part in a talent show in high school. I was encouraged when I got a laugh. That got me going and I did stand-up whenever I got a chance. Eventually, I moved on to do medicine while developing my comedy.”

He quickly adds: “Comedy was not something I ever thought I would do as a career. I thought it will be a hobby. I did not expect it to take me this far.”

Ken points out that at 46 years, he’s had an exhilarating journey so far.

“I’m married to a doctor and we have two beautiful children. I can’t ask for anything more. To top that, for me to have a second career at this point in my life, I’m very grateful.”

To anyone he meets with a knack for acting or comedy, Ken encourages them to keep performing. “No matter what your style is or where you are, just keep doing what you love to do,” he sums up.

Watch Dr. Ken every Sunday at 9.30 p.m. on Comedy Central.
