Post festival, garbage haunts Bengalureans

BENGALURU: Mounds of uncleared garbage are back to haunt Bengalureans as Bruhat Bengaluru Mahnagaara Palike (BBMP) authorities struggle to clear the additional garbage that has accumulated over the past two-three days during Dasara. Civic workers are doing extra rounds to clear garbage accumulated during the festival.

Heaps of garbage were seen at Vijayanagar, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Uttarahalli Main Road, Chikkalasandra, Padmanabhanagar, Ittamadu, Chandra Layout, Rajajinagar, RT Nagar, Amruthanagar, Marathahalli market areas and many other places.

“There is heavy traffic jam because of garbage piled up on the road in Kathriguppe. Even alternative roads have piles of garbage. Roads are narrow in these areas and vendors, after selling plantain stalks and other greens, dumped the leftover on the road. Vehicles are not able to move easily because of this,’’ said Meera, a resident of Uttarahalli.

Rashmi, a resident of Rajarajeshwari Nagar, said pourakarmikas have not come to pick up waste in their area for the last three days. “People are dumping festival leftovers at vacant sites. Manjunath, a resident of Amruthahalli near Hebbal, said that pourakarmikas had offered puja to BBMP garbage trucks and autos in that locality. “One of the pourakarmikas said that as they have offered pooja, they cannot use the vehicle. Only after the festival, they will lift the garbage,’’ he said.

Speaking to Express, BBMP Joint Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Sarfaraz Khan said they are doing micro management in clearing waste. “We have asked garbage auto tippers to go for second rounds to collect pumpkin, plantain leaf, flowers and other waste from individual houses. This apart, tractors will go to market areas in each zone/to clear green waste,’’ he said.

Khan further said there are farmers coming forward seeking green waste from the market for their farms that can be used as manure. “I have directed our officials to transport green waste to farmers even if their farms are 40 km away from the city limits,’’ he added.
