NewDelhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended his condolences to the bereave families, who were killed in a boat capsize in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district.
He informed that the Andhra Pradesh government and National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) were carrying out the rescue operations.
‘Capsizing of a boat in the Krishna River is anguishing. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy. Andhra Pradesh Government and @NDRFHQ (National Disaster Response Force) have been working on rescue operations,’ he wrote on micro-blogging website, Twitter.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and leader of opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and others expressed grief over the tragedy.
At least 16 tourists, including nine women and two children, were killed and eight others were reported missing as the boat capsized in the Krishna river on Sunday.
The boat overturned at Ibrahimpatnam Ferry Ghat around 5.20 PM The tourists were travelling from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangham near Vijayawada when the mishap occurred.
Government announced an ex gratia of Rs 8 lakh to each of the families of the deceased. ‘If they had taken the insurance under Chandranna Bima Scheme, an additional amount of Rs 2 lakh would be paid to each family.
