The individuals who have opened their Jan Dhan Account are also waived off or not subject to minimum balance requirement as in normal savings account with the account. The same holds true in respect of basic savings account, staff, students or salary accounts.
Nonetheless, in case of other accounts, the accountholder is charged a substantial fee for not maintaining minimum balance requirement on a monthly or quarterly basis. For the metro, urban, semi-urban and rural areas the minimum average balance on a monthly basis is required to be Rs. 3000, Rs. 3000, Rs, 2000 and Rs. 1000 respectively.
The penalty for non-compliance with the minimum balance rules has been slashed depending on the branch location in which the account holder defaults.
