A 32-year old widow and her five-year-old son died after they jumped into a trench in Airoli on Monday. Their bodies were recovered Tuesday morning.
Shobha Sandeep Walumbe and her son Arjun had left their home around 5am on Monday, but did not return until late in the evening. The family members panicked and lodged a missing persons’ complaint with the Rabale police station. Locals in Airoli found their bodes floating in the water and informed the police.
Pradeep Tidar, senior police inspector of Rabale police station, said that the woman had tied her son with a scarf and jumped into a construction site trench filled with water. “The trench was dug by the NMMC for building an auditorium. However, work was stopped for some time,” said Tidar. He added that their family identified the bodies.
Initial investigation revealed that there has been some family issue that led the woman to take the drastic step.
“The woman’s husband had also reportedly committed suicide around three years ago. After that, she was staying with her in-laws and two kids. She had an elder daughter too,” said another police official.
Police also recovered a suicide node that indicated that she was suffering from tuberculosis and she was in acute depression.
