Women are the pillars of strength of any family. As they are busy managing their professional and personal lives they often ignore their own health.

Millions of women globally are employed as homemakers or housewives or stay at home mothers are prone to skin disorders, as a result of their work in home

  •  Common health hazards of housewives include heart attacks, skin disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, mental disorders etc. In this article we are going to see in brief about the
most recurring disease called “Housewife’s eczema”.
  •  Eczema is defined as skin condition marked by itchy and inflamed patches of skin. There
are 7 types of eczema- atopic eczema, contact eczema, dyshidrotic eczema, nummular eczema, seborrheic eczema and stasis eczema. Let us see about Housewife’s eczema.

Housewife’s eczema is a type of hand eczema named for its frequent occurrence among housewives. The most common factor leading to this eczema is repeated exposure to chronic irritation from water and synthetic detergents

  •  Housewife’s eczema come under the category of dyshidrosis.

Housewife’s eczema unlike other types of eczema, is not normally accompanied by itching. However the affected skin at the fingertips may become thinner and show redness and scaling.
As this disorder advances, it may result in cracking skin, pain and bleeding. First it appears on the tips of first, second and third fingers of right hand due to more frequent use. In severe cases it
progresses down the fingers to the palm. Then it leads to candidiasis of fingernails and secondary infection causing pustules and pain in fingernails

Pathogenic factors of housewives eczema appear to include both endogenous and exogenous factors. Endogenous factors include atopic predisposition and local hyperidrosis

Type IV hypersensitivity reaction to exogenous antigens.
Processed by antigen presenting cells
Processed antigen+ sensitized lymphocytes
Multiplication of lymphocytes

Skin injury (inflammation, itching and rashes)

Environmental factors such as excessive water, contact with allergens or irritants and genetic disposition

Patch testing has been found to be helpful in the diagnosis of housewife’s eczema

Softening skin with preparations containing urea and salicylic acid. To reduce inflammation, creams and salves containing cortisone. Phytotherapy is more effective in chronic cases

Natural remedies include application of aloe vera gel, coconut oil, honey; dietary changes includes anti-inflammatory foods such as  fish, leafy greens, beans and lentils, colourful fruits, vegetables, turmeric and cinnamon

‘Conclusion’ means ‘The end .’ But there is no end or rest for housewife from managing the house. It is my mandatory advise for all the housewives to take care of their health and maintain
hygiene even in simple things you do. Housewives are the backbone of home. It is ought to protect them from the diseases of nature. Stay healthy, make the family wealthy. Hats off to all  the housewives.
