Spy shots showing a plug-in hybrid variant of the BMW X1 undergoing testing have been released online. This generation of the X1 will be the first to feature a hybrid powertrain, as the earlier generation X1 came with petrol and diesel engines.
While the exterior of the this variant appears to be largely identical to that of the standard model, it does feature a charging port which is located on the driver’s side front fender. The production model is also expected to feature special badging and a revised interior with hybrid-specific displays.
The X1 plug-in hybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor which derives power from a 7.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack. BMW has not announced any performance details as of yet, but the powertrain is expected to have a combined maximum output of 224hp and 385Nm of torque. This means that the plug-in hybrid X1 could possibly go from 0-100kph in approximately 7 seconds. The model is also likely to have an electric-only range of 40km.
While the turbocharged engine powers the front wheels, the electric motor sends power to the rear wheels. This enables the model to be a front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or an all-wheel drive when both the powertrains are working together.
The plug-in hybrid BMW X1 is expected to make its international debut later this year.
