Liquor Smuggling, 2 held

During their special drive against drunk driving in the Capital, the Delhi Police stumbled upon a big cache of illegal liquor near the Moolchand area on New Year’s Eve. Over 6,000 bottles of a high-end whiskey were seized and two men, belonging to the infamous Suresh Pandit gang, were arrested following a chase, the police said.

According to the police, the cache was receovered by a team of special staff from the southeast district. The two arrested men were identified as Amit, 22 and Sagar, 22, residents of Palam. The police said they were carrying the liquor in two Innova cars, which were seized.

“Information was received that a huge cache of illegal liquor was being transported from Gurugram, to be delivered in areas of Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Following this, a team led by inspector Rajender Kumar laid a trap near the Moolchand flyover on Ring Road, and on spotting the suspected vehicles from the AIIMS side, they were signalled to stop,” said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP southeast.

He further said that instead of slowing down, the drivers tried to accelerate. The teams then chased them in their vehicles and intercepted the two Innova cars. “On checking the vehicles, 72 cartons of Party Special Deluxe whiskey for sale in Haryana only were recovered. Accordingly, a case was registered and both the accused were arrested,” Biswal said.

The police said that both the accused used to procure liquor from a godown in Gurugram as per their boss Suresh Pandit’s demand. They would cover the cartons with bedsheets.

“They used Ring Road to transport the consignment from Gurugram to Noida and they used to drive during the night hours. In Noida, they used to hand over the consignment to the kingpin Pandit, who would further transport it to other parts of UP and Bihar,” the DCP said.
