Boat carrying school children capsizes in Maharashtra

Joyride turned into a tragedy for the students of KL Ponda High School and Junior College when the boat carrying 40 children capsized 2 nautical miles from the sea shore in Dahanu Maharashtra on Saturday. Two have been confirmed dead while six have been missing.

‘There was an incident of boat capsize at Dahanu Parnaka Beach. A boat carrying around 40 children capsized at 11.30 am. So far 32 children are rescued. Remaining are still missing, Search operation is going on,’ Palghar SP Manjunath Singe said.

‘All our local officers and staff are on the spot. Rescue team from other departments are also there. Coast Guard has flown its helicopters for search opera,’ he added.

Prima Facie cause of the incident is overloading. Students were not provided with life jackets. Dahanu is a coastal town known for Chickoo farming and a tourist destination in Palghar District.
