Newborn sold for Rs 45,000 for husband’s surgery

While the world was gearing up for New Year parties and resolutions, a mother was selling her newborn son in Uttar Pradesh.

In a shocking incident, poverty-stricken woman reportedly sold her 15-day-old son to an unknown man for her husband’s surgery.

According to news agency ANI, a resident of Bareilly’s Mirganj village sold her son because she ‘didn’t have adequate funds.’

Bareilly district magistrate Raghvendra Vikram Singh has asked a sub-divisional magistrate and a circle officer to probe the sale of the baby, The Telegraph reported.

The woman, identified as 30-year-old Sanju Maurya said that her husband Har Swaroop Maurya had suffered a major injury while working at a construction site in Uttarakhand.

The mother of three said that she her husband needed a surgery for which the couple needs to visit Lucknow. But with no one in the village coming to her rescue, Maurya was forced to take the drastic step.

Talking about the ‘sale’, she said that a man approached her last week and said that a ‘rich’ man is interested in her baby and would pay her the money if she sells the child to him. Later, she handed over the child to the man in exchange of promised amount.

Meanwhile, the police is also probing all angles including that of human trafficking.
